Frequently asked questions
Do I have to disclose an ADHD assessment to my employer?
No. ADHD assessment and diagnosis are private medical information. You are not required to disclose either the assessment process or the diagnosis to your employer. You may choose to disclose only after diagnosis, only when requesting reasonable adjustments, or never.
What are reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010?
Reasonable adjustments are changes an employer must make to remove disadvantage for a disabled employee (ADHD is a recognised disability under the Act). Common examples include flexible hours for medication reviews, written rather than verbal-only instructions, and quiet workspaces. Adjustments must be reasonable for the employer's size and resources.
How do I request reasonable adjustments at work?
After diagnosis, request a confidential conversation with your manager or HR. Present specific, clinician-recommended adjustments tied to work tasks (e.g. "noise-cancelling headphones to manage auditory overload during focused work"). Frame the request as enabling consistent performance, not as special treatment.
